Fritz Teaches Us About Aurora Borealis
Posted on February 11 2019
Fritz here. One of the coolest weather things you will ever see is the aurora borealis.
When conditions are just right, we can see the aurora borealis here in Minnesota! Normally the northern lights are only visible at very high latitudes in places like Alaska and Canada. However, on extremely active days the auroral oval expands to more southern latitudes.
The Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights are caused by the interaction of the solar wind with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere. The solar wind is a stream of charged particles escaping the Sun.
The Aurora Borealis can be in a broad spectrum of colors. Usually, it is a faint green-yellow or white-grey. However, purples and reds can also be seen.
